The Mountain That Remembers
The mountain was still dreaming when Ryuji Tenkai woke.
He could feel it in the stillness of the air, in the way the darkness outside his window hung thick and unbroken, in the cold that had crept beneath the floorboards during the night and settled into his bones like an old memory. No birds sang yet. No wind stirred the pines that clung to the slopes above Kaido Hollow. Only the faint murmur of the stream at the village's edge broke the silence, and even that sounded muffled, as though the world itself had not yet decided to begin.
He rose anyway. He always did.
By the time he laced his sandals and slung his practice blade across his back, the sky beyond the eastern ridge had begun to soften from black to the deep bruised blue that came before color. He climbed the familiar path out of the village without needing to see it, his feet finding root and stone from years of habit, his breath fogging in the thin mountain air. Kaido Hollow slept below him, a scattering of thatched roofs tucked into the folds of the valley, smoke from banked hearths rising in thin grey ribbons. He did not look back at it.
