The Weight of Water

The dock at Pacific Deep Research Station smelled the way it always had—brine and diesel and something underneath both, a mineral coldness that seemed to rise straight up from the water itself, as though the ocean exhaled its secrets only in the hour before sunrise. Elara Quinn stood at the edge of the concrete apron, watching mist unravel off the harbor, and let that smell settle into her lungs like an old, unwelcome friend.

Twenty-two years. She had counted them without meaning to, the way you count rings in a tree you didn't plant but can't stop measuring.

The cleats along the dock's edge were rusted now, orange bleeding into the gray paint, and she crouched to touch one without quite deciding to. Her father's hand had rested here once. She remembered that morning with the strange, merciless clarity of childhood memory—too young to understand what he was leaving for, old enough to understand that he was leaving. He'd knelt exactly where she knelt now, checking the tension of a line, whistling something tuneless while gulls screamed overhead like they already knew.
