The Bell Above the Door
The fog came early that October, turing off the Thames like something with intent, something that remembered the war and had decided to stay. It pressed against the mullioned windows of Hartley's Books with a patience that unsettled Eleanor more than any storm could, seeping into the mortar of Cecil Court until the whole lane seemed to hold its breath.
She stood behind the counter, counting the day's takings by the amber glow of a single lamp, and found, as she so often did, that the sum amounted to very little. Three shillings and fourpence. A copy of *Bleak House* sold to a schoolmaster with ink-stained fingers. A packet of postcards to a woman who hadn't looked up from beneath her umbrella long enough to say thank you. It was not a living, not really, but it was hers, and in the two years since James had not come home, she had learned to measure her days by smaller currencies than money.
