One Pattern, Three Masks
It's 3:14 a.m., and you're awake again.
Not the good kind of awake, not the alert-mind-ready-for-the-day kind. This is the other kind — the ceiling-staring kind, the kind where the room is dark but your head is lit up like a control panel, every switch flipped at once. You can hear the refrigerator humming two rooms away. You can hear your own heartbeat, a little too fast for someone who is, technically, resting. And underneath all of it, quiet but relentless, there's a question that won't let you go back under.
*Why haven't you finished it yet?*
Maybe it's the project sitting half-open on your laptop, the one you told your team would be done by Friday and is still, somehow, forty percent done on a Tuesday. Maybe it's the business idea you've been "developing" for eight months, which mostly means you've bought the domain name and told exactly three people about it. Maybe it's smaller than that — an email you've reread four times without sending, a conversation you've rehearsed but never had, a canvas in the other room that's been the same shade of almost-finished since spring. Whatever it is for you, you know its shape. You could trace it in the dark.
And here's the strange…
