Sunlight pierced through the cracked blinds, casting slanted stripes across the cluttered floor. Jack’s eyes snapped open, the shrill tone of his alarm already drowned beneath a chorus of buzzing notifications from his phone resting precariously on the edge of his nightstand. His heart thudded wildly as he blinked away the fog of sleep, realizing instantly that he had overslept. Panic tightened its grip around his chest.
He scrambled out of bed, limbs tangled in rumpled sheets, and stumbled toward the bathroom. The mirror reflected a disheveled young man—the dark circles under his eyes deepened by restless nights and a frazzled expression etched across his face. Jack’s apartment felt suffocating, a cramped nest of chaos. His desk was buried under piles of notebooks, half-finished projects, and a scattering of receipts and coffee cups.
