The Boy Next Door
The road into Millbrook Falls curves the same way it always has, hugging the reservoir before it spills out into Main Street, and Lucy feels her chest tighten with something she can't quite name as the water flashes silver between the trees. Two years. Two years since she peeled out of this town in her secondhand Civic with a duffel bag and a chip on her shoulder the size of a boulder, swearing she'd never come back except for holidays, and even those under protest. Now here she is, windows down, radio humming some song she doesn't recognize, driving past the Presbyterian church with its crooked steeple and the diner where she used to waste entire Saturday afternoons pretending to study.
Nothing has changed. That's the strange part. The hardware store still has the same faded American flag drooping in its window. The Hendersons' dog still barks at every car that passes their fence. And yet Lucy feels different behind the wheel—older, sharper around the edges, like she's wearing a version of herself that doesn't quite fit into these narrow streets anymore.
