The first Tuesday of fall semester at Kessler College smelled like cut grass, sunscreen, and the particular hope that comes from nobody having failed a midterm yet. Vicky Vales sat at her favorite table outside the Brew House — the one under the striped awning where she could see the quad, the fountain, and, more importantly, be seen — with a laminated schedule in front of her and a highlighter capped between her teeth like a cigar.

"Okay," she said, spitting the highlighter into her palm, "if everyone could stop talking about their feelings for one second, I need eyes on this."

"We weren't talking about feelings," said Priya Anand, not looking up from the anatomy flashcards fanned across her half of the table like a tarot spread of doom. "We were talking about whether the cadaver lab smell comes out of denim. It does not, for the record."

"Charming," Vicky said. "Anyway. Squad schedule. I've color-coded by intensity level." She slid the paper across the table with the reverence of someone unveiling a peace treaty. Red for game-day routines. Yellow for conditioning. Green for what she'd labeled, in small, firm letters, *recovery — mandatory, no arguing, Brianna.*
