The Globe That Whispers Secrets
Rain drums against the roof of Grandma Rosa's house in fat, impatient drops, turning the afternoon the color of dishwater. Lila presses her nose to the living room window, watching rivers form in the gutters outside, and lets out a sigh so heavy it fogs the glass.
"There's nothing to do," she groans, drawing a wobbly circle in the mist with her finger.
Max flops backward onto the couch cushions, arms flung wide like he's just lost a fight with gravity. "We could build a fort," he offers, though even he sounds unconvinced. "Or play hide-and-seek."
"We already did both. Twice." Lila turns from the window, her dark curls bouncing with the motion. "Grandma said we could explore upstairs, remember? She said there's a room we've never seen."
Max sits up so fast his elbow nearly catches her in the ribs. "The attic?"
"The attic," Lila confirms, already grinning.
They pad through the hallway on sock feet, past photographs of relatives whose names Lila can never quite remember, past the grandfather clock that ticks like it's counting down to something important.
