The bells of the Sanctum begin their tolling before the sun has fully cleared the eastern ridge, and Pufferion V stands very still at the threshold of the Spire of Founding, letting the cold brass sound roll through his chest like something trying to wake a sleeping animal. Mist clings to the lower terraces of Peakis in long gray ribbons, softening the jagged silhouette of the city into something almost tender, almost forgivable. From this height he can see it all: the copper domes of the merchant quarter catching the first amber light, the black iron trestles of the steam-tram lines threading between temple spires like veins beneath skin, the river Ilyth coiling silver through the valley's belly. Peakis does not so much wake as ignite, quarter by quarter, bell by bell, until the whole sprawling body of it hums with a single trembling note of anticipation.
He has stood here four times before. Four Founding Days since his coronation, four renewals of vows that felt, each year, a fraction more like a costume and a fraction less like a covenant.
