The Quiet Beginning
The first pale fingers of dawn slipped through the threadbare curtains, stretching across the cracked linoleum floor of Leo’s tiny apartment. He lay still beneath a thin, faded blanket, the chill of early morning seeping into his bones. The hum of the old radiator sputtered weakly, a steady companion in the hush before the town stirred awake. Outside, the air held a crispness that carried the faint scent of damp earth and distant pine, a quiet promise mingled with the lingering ache of loneliness.
Leo’s eyelids fluttered open, heavy but resolute. He blinked against the soft light, the edges of his vision hazy from restless sleep. For a moment, he simply listened— the faint creak of wooden floorboards in the apartment above, the distant bark of a dog, the low murmur of a car engine awakening down the street. The world was beginning to breathe, slow and deliberate, just like him. Slowly, he swung his legs over the side of the bed, toes brushing the cold floor.
