What the Snow Remembers

The snow fell softly, blanketing the world outside in a serene white, yet within Alyssa’s heart, a tempest brewed. The old cabin, nestled deep in the woods, felt both familiar and foreign, a sanctuary turned prison by the weight of secrets it harbored. She wrapped her arms around herself, feeling the chill seep into her bones. Memories of laughter echoed from years gone by, but they were swiftly drowned by the haunting silence of the present.

Alyssa stared out the window, her breath fogging the glass as she recalled the last time she had seen her twins. Their laughter had danced through the air like music, light and joyous, but that melody had been abruptly silenced. It had been a simple winter evening, the kind where shadows stretched long and cozy fires crackled in the hearth. Yet, the warmth of those moments was now tainted by the gnawing uncertainty of their disappearance.

Kael, her enigmatic cousin, emerged in her thoughts like a fading ghost. With his dark hair and piercing eyes, he had always been a source of fascination and fear. When they were children, his stories of monsters lurking in the shadows had ignited her imagination, and now, they felt like a grim prophecy.…

What the Snow Took

The kitchen had become a staging ground for strangers.

Alyssa sat at her own table, wrapped in a blanket someone had produced from somewhere—Nora, maybe, moving through the chaos with the brisk efficiency of a woman holding herself together through sheer force of will—and watched uniformed men and women track slush across her floor without once feeling the urge to object. What did the floor matter now. "Mrs. Hale." The sheriff was a broad, weathered man named Dell Pruitt, his voice pitched low and even, the practiced calm of someone trained to speak to people in the worst moments of their lives. "I need you to walk me through it again. Start from when you last saw them."

"I've told you three times."

"I know. I'm sorry. I need to hear it once more."

She told him again—the onions, the twenty minutes bargained down to fifteen, the window above the sink, the three glances that had carried her children from safety into absence. Her voice had gone hoarse from…

The Name She Couldn't Forget

The scarf lay on the kitchen table between them like evidence in a trial neither of them had agreed to attend.

Alyssa had dropped it there the moment she burst back through the door, snow still melting off her boots onto the floor she'd stopped caring about hours ago, and Nora—Mara, she'd always called her Nora since college, a nickname so old it had calcified into truth—had gone white at the sight of it. Not confused. Not curious. White in the particular way of someone who recognized an object they'd hoped never to see again.

"You know what this is," Alyssa said. Her voice had steadied somewhere on the run back through the trees, the panic compressing into something harder, something with edges. "Don't tell me you don't. I watched your face just now, Mara. I watched it."

Mara's hand had drifted to her throat, an old habit from childhood that Alyssa had seen a thousand times before—when a teacher called on her unprepared, when her mother phoned with bad news, when the truth cornered her and she hadn't yet decided whether to run from it or meet it. "Alyssa—"

"I found it tied to a tree. Fifty feet from where Wren and Rowan vanished into thin air." She heard her own voice…
