The town of Chandanpur woke the way it always did — with the clatter of tin buckets at the well, the bleating protest of a goat tied too long to its post, and the thin ribbon of smoke that rose from Ramesh Mehta's tea stall on the corner of Gandhi Road. That smoke was the town's unofficial clock. When it curled up into the pale morning sky, people knew it was time to start moving, to start earning, to start surviving another day in a place where the earth was red and cracked and the rains came late more often than not.

The stall itself was little more than a wooden cart with a tin roof, patched in three places with sheets of rusted metal that clanged like a badly tuned drum whenever the wind picked up. A hand-painted sign, faded from years of sun, read MEHTA CHAI — HOT & SWEET, though the paint had chipped so badly that from a distance it looked like it said MEHTA CH — H T & SWEET, which had become something of a joke among the regulars. Ramesh didn't mind. He'd laugh along, pour another glass of steaming chai with a flourish of his wrist, and say, "Hot and sweet is all a man needs to remember anyway."
