The radiator clanked twice and went silent, as if it too had given up for the night. Lena sat hunched over her desk, the only light in the room spilling from a cheap lamp whose shade had yellowed with age, casting everything in the color of old paper. Outside, the city hummed faintly—the distant sigh of a tram, a dog barking somewhere down the block—but inside the MIRY Association's office, the world had narrowed to a single circle of light and the stack of envelopes she couldn't bring herself to open.
She opened them anyway. That was the job now: opening things she dreaded, reading words that confirmed what she already knew in her bones.

She read the sentence three times, as though repetition might reveal some hidden clause, some overlooked appendix where the foundation admitted they'd made a mistake. But the words stayed the same each time, flat and polite and final. She set the letter down next to the others—three rejections this month alone, each one a small, bureaucratic guillotine.
The office around her seemed to shrink with every passing hour. Boxes of donated books…
