The afternoon sun hung low, casting a golden haze over the edge of the village where the fields began to thin and wildwoods whispered secrets to the wind. Lila wandered along the narrow dirt path, her footsteps muffled by the soft carpet of moss and fallen leaves. She had always been drawn to this forgotten fringe, a place where the ordinary world seemed to fray, and the trees leaned in closer, as if eager to share hidden tales.
A gentle breeze stirred the air, carrying with it the faint scent of blooming jasmine and something else—something elusive, like the faintest hint of ancient magic. Lila paused, her breath catching as her gaze fixed upon a shimmering curtain stretched between two gnarled oaks. It wasn’t there moments before. The veil flickered with iridescent hues, like sunlight fracturing through a prism, delicate and impossible. She blinked, doubt shadowing her eyes, yet the glimmer persisted, beckoning her nearer.
