The Book Behind the Shelf

Rain slants against the bus window in silver threads, and Lila watches the town of Hawthorne blur into smears of amber and gray. Her phone buzzes against her thigh for the fourth time in ten minutes, and she doesn't need to look to know who it is. She looks anyway.

Emma: you said you'd come over. i literally rearranged my whole afternoon

Emma: hello???

Emma: whatever. forget it

Lila's thumb hovers over the screen, composing and deleting three different apologies before settling on nothing at all. She tells herself she'll call later, when she has better words ready, when the guilt sitting like a stone in her stomach has had time to dissolve into something she can actually explain. The truth is uglier and simpler than any excuse she could invent: she doesn't want to spend the afternoon watching reality shows and talking about boys neither of them likes. She wants quiet. She wants paper and ink and somewhere else to be.

The bus hisses to a stop two blocks from the library, and she steps down into the rain without an umbrella, letting it needle her cheeks and soak into the shoulders of her jacket. There's something almost holy about walking that stretch of Maple Street in bad…
