The Girl Who Forgot the Sky

Ash fell like snow that had forgotten how to be white.

Elara opened her eyes to a sky the color of a healing bruise, gray shot through with sickly yellow, and for a long moment she did not understand that she was looking at a sky at all. It seemed too close, too heavy, as if it had settled over the world like a shroud someone had draped across a corpse and never bothered to remove. She lay still and let it press down on her, because moving seemed like a decision, and she could not remember how to make one.

Her body remembered pain before her mind remembered anything else. It came first as a dull throb behind her eyes, then sharpened into something more particular—her ribs, her palms, the back of her skull where it had met stone or wood or something equally unkind. When she finally gathered the will to sit up, the world tilted and reeled, and she pressed one hand flat against the ground to steady herself.

The ground was warm. Not sun-warm. Ember-warm.

She looked down and saw that she knelt in a bed of ash, fine and gray, drifted into the corners of what had once been a room. Blackened beams jutted from the earth like the ribs of some great beast, picked clean and charred. A…
